Record of the platform economy
Monopoly formation: The investors grant loans for the rapid purchase of competitors and start-ups. Competition is promoted and exploited at the lower level in order to ultimately eliminate it. Investors accept years of lean periods, but are keen to immediately exploit every opportunity for price increases.
Tax flight: Like their investors, the platform companies also have worldwide tax flight organized by professional advisors.
Precariousness: The platform companies are further pushing the practice of the working poor, seen in the USA since the 1960s, towards an even poorer digital precariat: The globally expanded army of millions consists of piecework receivers, pseudo self-employed freelancers, on-call workers and individualized low-wage earners. In Germany, the platform companies have about one million employees â the employment offices donât know. Social insurance organizations lose billions of euros every year.522
Spying: The brokers record all accessible data of their employees and customers (including keyboard entries, mouse clicks). Data processing takes place mainly in the USA.
Way of life: The business focuses on individualized services in metropolitan areas. This promotes overcrowding and contamination of the already overstretched cities.
Homelessness: The increased asociality is also reflected in the unfettered regional housing market. California, with its Silicon Valley and San Francisco centers, has become the most asocial residential area: the highest average (!) rents of USD 4,000 a month for a small house â and the most homeless. The supermarkets also charge much higher prices.523
Governments as accomplices: The European Union promotes the platform model because the agencies create âflexible working arrangements and new sources of incomeâ.524 The companies are also arming themselves against criticism. In the USA, Deliveroo, Uber and Airbnb have joined forces and are calling on the government to oppose the increased initiatives of those affected and trade unions: The labor law must be changed, adapted to the practices of the digital platform industry and a ânew class of workersâ legalized.525
Resistance: Those affected and harmed by the platform economy around the world have begun to resist.526 Courts and municipal administrations have imposed some restrictions. But governments are blocking, left parties and trade unions are weak and ignorant.
The alternative: At the beginning of the 20th century, the 8-hour day and the 40-hour week with (at the time) adequate labor income were already possible â today, with the help of the new technologies, working time could be at least halved and evenly distributed. Labor output and incomes must and can also be distributed fairly instead of compulsively administering sick-making unemployment and stressful over- and under-employment.
